What We Do

Our meetings are informal. We usually start with a chat while the activity for the evening is being prepared. Activities include lessons in lip-reading which is a very useful skill to learn, or talks by visiting guests, or playing various games , some of which help with practising our communication skills. The evening then concludes with light refreshments. Occasionally we visit places of interest, usually by minibus, or go to a nearby theatre to enjoy a captioned performance of a play. Members are encouraged to contribute their own ideas for the programme of events.

History

The Group was formed in 1945 by servicemen and women returning from World War 2. They sufferd from hearing losses acquired during the war and decided to form a Group to help fight for better aids and equipment for deaf and hard of hearing people. The Group was then named Twickenham Hard of Hearing Club but that name was changed three years ago to Twickenham Hearing Support Group. We feel this name encompasses the needs of deaf and hard of hearing people more than the old name. The club played an active part in the campaign for better hearing aids and audiology services through the National Health Service and the development of additional support equipment.

We began the Sympathetic Hearing Scheme through which the development of loops with the logo developed in shops and banks.

Support

To lose hearing can be devastating. Fear of misunderstanding what is going on around you when you simply cannot hear clearly is real. Sometimes isolation develops. Today there are many aids to combat the effects of hearing loss. Hearing aids get better all the time. For the severely deaf there are cochlear implants. For many people, these devices can restore a great deal of hearing. However, for some people, reluctance to venture out is a real threat to their happiness. Most will get support from friends and family. Visiting our group you will also meet many other people with the same problems that you have to face every day, and you will learn some useful tips on coping with hearing loss. Discussing experiences and comparing notes with other members often helps to get things into perspective. The Group also has visiting speakers such as audiologists and hearing therapists who keep us up to date on modern aids.

Future of the Group

We welcome new members both young and old. We need people interested in the development of hearing aids both scientifically and as users. We want to continue the good work the Group has achieved since 1945
